Pentagon limits gear in surplus auctions

--The Defense Department's effort to block Iran from obtaining much-needed hardware for its fleet of F-14 Tomcat fighter jets has led the military to pull far more than parts from F-14s out of its surplus auctions.

The Pentagon's retired F-14s contain roughly 76,000 components. Many of those parts are usable on other planes and until this year, were sold by the military on the surplus market.

The Defense Department in January halted the sale of all parts from its Tomcats. On Thursday, it disclosed that the suspension went far beyond items from F-14s, and actually sweeps in 163,000 types of components, including parts from other planes and any support equipment that could be used in connection with Tomcats.

Bids low for Pope's VW

SAN FRANCISCO -- While Pope Benedict celebrated his 80th birthday, the latest eBay auction for his old Volkswagen Golf ended without a winner on the weekend.

Although bids for the 1999 metallic grey hatchback surpassed $204,000 US, a reserve price wasn't met. EBay spokesman Catherine Fisher said she didn't know what the seller's minimum price was. A message left with the owner, Texas-based online casino GoldenPalace.com, was not returned.

Benedict celebrated his 80th birthday a day early yesterday with a Mass in his honour on the flower-bedecked steps of St. Peter's Square.

Benedict was born in April 16 in Marktl Am Inn, a riverside town in the Bavaria region of Germany, and sprinkled among the crowd in the square bathed in brilliant sunlight were fellow countrymen and women in traditional dress, including feather-trimmed hats.

Temporary reprieve for Vida Shaw bridge

Bids for the replacement of the Vida Shaw Bridge will be delayed to give parish officials and citizens more time to discuss the future of the structure. The state Department of Transportation and Development was scheduled to receive bids for the replacement of the nearly 70-year-old, single-lane bridge Wednesday. However, recent interest in the bridge has sparked state Rep. Troy Hebert, D-Jeanerette, to request a delay.Hebert, in an April 12 letter to Bill Fontenot, Acadiana district administrator for the state Department of Transportation and Development, asked that DOTD postpone the bids to replace the bridge for another 30 to 60 days. "After talking to parish officials and hearing from local residents, this additional time will hopefully afford us the opportunity to discuss other options dealing with this historic structure," Hebert explained in his request.Romero said a meeting will take place in the next 30 days in the Loreauville area so both sides can present their concerns to state and local officials, as well as representatives from the DOTD.Fontenot said Friday the bids are now scheduled to be received May 30."It seems that parish officials, state officials and citizens want some questions answered," Fontenot said.

Bolivia to Auction Tin From Seized Glencore Smelter (Update1)

April 18 (Bloomberg) -- Bolivia plans to sell tin from a plant seized two months ago from Swiss commodity trader Glencore International AG as the metal trades at the highest in at least 18 years.

The country is offering a prospectus for the sale, Katherine Alvarez, a spokeswoman for state miner Comibol, said in a telephone interview yesterday from La Paz. The smelter is eighth-largest in the world by production, according to the St. Albans, U.K.-based International Tin Research Institute.

The planned auction ``could make a difference in the world market,'' said Peter Kettle, ITRI manager for statistics and market studies. Most of Vinto's metal, which has a low lead content, was exported to the U.S. during Glencore's ownership, he said.

President Evo Morales's government seized the smelter from Baar, Switzerland-based Glencore as part of a drive to control a greater share of the Andean country's mineral wealth.
