Euro 2012 to stay with 16 teams: hosts present bids

'We have decided today that there will be no expansion of the tournament to 24 teams,' UEFA vice-president Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder said after an executive committee meeting in Cardiff, Wales.

The decision comes on the eve of a decision by the UEFA board on the hosts for the 2012 tournament. Three candidates are in the running: Italy, Croatia-Hungary jointly and Poland-Ukraine jointly.

UEFA, Europe's ruling body for football, had commissioned a study at the beginning of the year into the idea of a 24-team tournament from 2012.

Germany's Mayer-Vorfelder said he believed the decision to retain a 16-team format for the tournament was the correct one.

With 53 member associations in UEFA it meant that roughly one in three of the continent's football nations were already represented, he said.

Rare farm machinery auctioned near Armidale

Hundreds of people from as far away as north Queensland and Melbourne have attended an auction of vintage and antique farm machinery south of Armidale on the weekend.

The auction, on Bill Morton's property at Dangarsleigh, included rare early 20th century farming equipment.

The rarest items were two Twin City tractors, which were made in the 1920s by an American company.

Although they were not in working order, they still fetched prices of up to $10,000.

One successful bidder, John Barwick, says it was money well spent.

"It's quite unique - I haven't seen anything like it - to have machinery in as good order as this," he said.

Auctioneer Victor Moore says many people were surprised by the value of the items.

"Extremely unusual and a lot of the items we're seeing here are very, very rare," he said.

EU Commission warns Netherlands over ABN bids

BRUSSELS, April 19 (Reuters) - The European Commission warned the Netherlands on Thursday not to discriminate against bids for ABN AMRO (AAH.AS: Quote, Profile, Research) amid concerns about the Dutch central bank's opposition to a consortium of potential buyers.

"All bids should be assessed in a non-discriminatory way," said Oliver Drewes, a spokesman for European Internal Market Commissioner Charlie McCreevy.

The Dutch central bank, which would have to approve any deal, said on Wednesday that a joint takeover offer by Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS.L: Quote, Profile, Research), Fortis (FOR.BR: Quote, Profile, Research) and Banco Santander (SAN.MC: Quote, Profile, Research) would entail "strong risks and complications".

Separately, British bank Barclays (BARC.L: Quote, Profile, Research) is in exclusive talks to take over ABN AMRO.
