Science Scene

NASA astronaut Sunita Williams may have been orbiting over 210 miles above the surface of the Earth on Apr. 16, but she still managed to compete in the annual Boston Marathon - a grueling 26-mile run.

Attached to her treadmill with a harness so she wouldn't float away, Williams began the race along with scores of others on the ground at 10 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. While most competitors ran in the chilly 58-degree Fahrenheit weather, Williams completed her trek in the climate-controlled 78-degree Fahrenheit conditions of the International Space Station.

"Those guys are kicking butt even though it's cold," said Williams when told of the times of her friends and sister, who were also competing in the race.

With energy from pieces of orange tossed her way in the weightlessness of space by her crewmembers, Williams finished with an unofficial time of 4 hours, 23 minutes and 46 seconds.

AOT must clean up its act entirely

The Airports of Thailand (AOT) decision last month to terminate King Power International's concession contracts to exclusively operate duty-free shops and manage the commercial area at Suvarnabhumi Airport is no surprise. Everyone saw it coming. After the September 19 coup, King Power, which had until then been extremely good at finding all the right political connections, found itself in a tight spot.

The AOT board resolved to nullify the two concessions on technical grounds, after the Council of State, the government's legal advisory body, ruled that King Power had intentionally skirted the Public-Private Joint Venture Act through deception, an allegation the company denies. The Council of State said King Power deliberately under-declared the value of the investment in each of the two contracts as being below Bt1 billion to avoid the greater scrutiny that would otherwise have been applied.

Smith bids Hawkeyes farewell

Shortly after Todd Lickliter was introduced as the new Iowa men's basketball coach, star player Tyler Smith was asked if he would return to Iowa next season.

Smith, a 6-foot-7 forward from Pulaski, Tenn., wasn't very convincing, which caused speculation he would transfer.

The speculation became fact Friday afternoon when the University of Iowa announced that Smith had been granted a release from his scholarship.

"Tyler asked to be released, expressing his desire to be closer to his family," Lickliter said in a statement. "We respect his decision to be near his family and will grant the release in order for Tyler to further his education closer to home."

Smith's father, Billy, lives in Tennessee and suffers from lung cancer. Smith also has a baby daughter who lives in Tennessee.

Bike Auction This Weekend

It's that time of year. The City of Winnipeg's annual bicycle auction goes this weekend at Varsity View Sportsplex on Ridgewood Avenue in Charleswood.

About 600 bicycles will be auctioned off Saturday, and another 400 on Sunday. Viewing starts at 7 Saturday morning, and 10 o'clock Sunday morning.

There's a registration fee of 5-dollars plus GST. But that means if you're bike is ever stolen and recovered by the police.. you'll get it back, no charge. The auction accepts just about all forms of payment with the exception of cheques.
