$40 million in art on the block. Quite a month.

Fourteen big auctions of art works worth more than $40 million will be held in Melbourne and Sydney over the next month – the largest number ever run in Australia in such a short time. Cashed-up collectors and investors have already set new records for paintings this year while a market loaded with money has attracted more auctioneers hoping to generate a profit from pictures.

Bonhams, which claims to be one of the largest fine art auction houses in the world, is launching its new Melbourne sale rooms tonight under the Bonhams & Goodman shingle. The Sydney-based firm expects 300 guests from the arts, banking and legal professions, together with dealers and private collectors, will be present when Melbourne Lord Mayor John So opens the new gallery in Malvern Road, Prahran.

The sale room starts off a series of auctions it estimates will generate $7 million on Sunday when 185 pieces of jewellery and collectibles go under the hammer, to be followed by a further 311 objects from the Neville Locker collection in Sydney on Sunday week.

Fayetteville begins bidding process

FAYETTEVILLE - In an early morning meeting on Friday, March 23, the Fayetteville Board of Education voted to approve going to the bid phase in building the new school building.

The new facility will be ready to open in 2009. In this stage of the planning, the estimated cost from the construction manager for tree removal, the relocation of utilities, and to prepare the ground to build, will cost $1,800,000.

As a side note, the Fayetteville Elementary School will not be demolished until the new facilities are open and ready to accommodate students in 2009. The time window to purchase the elementary school to stop it from being demolished, however, is closing soon.

Along with the plans for the new building, the board of education also approved to go to bid for the school's new administration building, which would be just to the east of the school's current boiler room.

WSJ: United Auto Workers considering bidding for Chrysler

News media group Wall Street Journal has reported that the United Auto Workers (UAW) union is now considering putting in a bid for the DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler division in return for cost concessions.

Chrysler is struggling in the US market as they face intense competition from Japanese automakers. DaimlerChrysler has said that they are looking for potential offers for this company.

The report stated that this proposal was put forward by a small group of workers. They could entail swapping cuts in healthcare benefits and other cost concessions for the stake in Chrysler.

Some of the parties said to be interested in acquiring Chrysler are private equity firms Cerberus Capital Management, Blackstone Group and Canadian auto parts maker Magna International Inc.
