Modest Mouse, Shins, Decemberists Swag in Art Auction

Buckman Elementary School, an arts magnet school in Portland's public system, is rife with the cool, artsy kids. And these cool, artsy kids-- along with some high-profile, indie rock favorites-- have donated some items to be auctioned in benefit of the school; they're no mere pinch-pot ashtray castoffs, either. In addition to a fly-fishing trip and jaunts to the Sonoma wine country, a series of hand-decorated mini-guitars and other swag from the likes of the Decemberists and Carson Ellis, Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock, the Shins, Stephen Malkmus and newest Jick Janet Weiss, Sam Coombs of Quasi, and the Dandy Warhols will go up for the good cause. The Art Rocks auction takes place in two parts: the first-- organized by Sleater-Kinney pillar and Buckman parent Corin Tucker-- goes down web-ways April 22, when online bidders can stake their claim on those hand-decorated mini-guitars via eBay (keyword: Buckman).

Sanders’ tougher rules will help Jackson County

Katheryn Shields' mishandling of professional services contracts attracted lots of negative attention for the former Jackson County executive. The contracts also undermined the credibility of county government.

Now Mike Sanders, her successor, says he'll sign an executive order establishing tougher rules for issuing contracts to consultants, lawyers and others. Sanders will discuss his sound plan, which does not need the County Legislature's approval, with lawmakers today.

Under the county charter, the contracts can be issued only by the county executive. The charter does not require competitive bids or notification of the Legislature.

When Shields gave out dozens of contracts over her 12 years in office, she didn't call for competitive bids. So no one could tell whether the county was getting good deals.

Man auctions speeding ticket on web

Wellington - In a strange example of Internet madness, a New Zealander has sold a NZ$130 (about R500) speeding ticket on a local online auction website, a newspaper reported on Friday. Nearly 30 000 people viewed Bob Grieve's ticket on the Trade Me site before Allan Hearn, an insurance assessor from Pukekohe, bought it for 51 New Zealand dollars. Hearn said he had never had a speeding ticket - a gap in his life that is now filled, The Press of Christchurch reported. "For 50 bucks, who cares?" he asked. "I told my missus about it, and she called me an idiot." Grieve, a TV cameraman from Christchurch, posted his photograph holding the ticket on the site and said he had fielded a flurry of amorous comments as well as bids. One woman asked if the holder came with the ticket and bid four times, he said.

Event auctions art for ARC

Tongue-tingling champagne, scrumdiddlyumptious entrees and more than 100 donated artworks make for a night to remember.

Friday from 5 to 10 p.m., more than 270 guests are expected to get their fill of food, art and social flair during the 2007 Artists for ARC event, presented by Arc-Winnebago County Disability Association, held at LaSures Banquet Hall.

The auction/dinner features a one-hour special event from 5 to 6 p.m. for ticket holders, where guests can enjoy a new champagne buffet and live jazz music with Mario Noche.

"Its kind of pre-event where people will actually have an opportunity to meet with and talk to the artists," said Meghann Kasper, board member and ARC volunteer.

At 6 p.m., doors open to the main event, where dinner is served and bidding begins on more than 100 art pieces from pottery and paintings to homemade purses, in the live and silent auctions.
