Mixed Forecast for Online Auctions

(Multichannel News) _ As eBay's Internet-based TV ad-auction venture hit massive turbulence, another from Google pulled onto the runway.

The Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau last week abruptly pulled out of eBay's online marketplace for buying advertising slots on cable networks, dealing a critical blow to the project before it got off the ground. The CAB's about-face came just days after Google announced a deal with EchoStar Communications to sell a portion of the ad inventory on Dish Network's 125 national channels in an auction format.

After several members of the consortium did a "deep dive" on eBay's Media Marketplace exchange for the past month, CAB CEO Sean Cunningham said, they concluded that the system would not provide the capabilities CAB needed.

Bids are in for new boat ramp at Foster

The ramp would be the main attraction at Calkins Park, which Linn County plans to develop at Highway 20 and Quartzville Road east of Sweet Home.

The county received six bids for the project, which the Oregon State Marine Board estimates will cost $563,000. That includes construction of the boat ramp and a parking lot.

Committed Collector

When Evanston resident Lionel Carter purchased his first baseball card, Babe Ruth was still hitting home runs.

Seventy-four years and about 50,000 cards later, Carter, 89, has been forced to put his collection up for sale.

Burglars ransacked Carter's home last November. They took his wife's jewelry and emptied a drawer filled with a number of his baseball cards.

The stolen cards were recovered, but the jewelry was not. Carter feared the thieves would return. He said the police gave him two options to ensure his safety: Either put the cards in a safety deposit box or sell the collection.

"I sold every one of the cards because I didn't want anything to remind me of them," Carter said. "They meant so much to me (after) so many years of collecting.

Patent auctions generate big sales

An innovativeChicago intellectual property firm is creating a live auction marketplace, which is rare in an age where many companies are shifting their business online.

More than 200 attended Ocean Tomo Auctions LLCs auction Thursday at the Union League Club of Chicago. It was the third such event hosted by Ocean Tomo.

This is like the Christies or Sothebys of patent auctions, said George Kelakos of Kelakos Advisors LLC.

Opening bids ranged from $10,000 to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Bids were solicited in at least $5,000 increments.

The main advantage of the auction is simply that it is one-stop shopping for patents, said Bruce Lehman, former head of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. There really isnt any other place you can go to get a wide variety of patents.
