| Pennsylvania Latest Battleground in eBay Consignment-Sales Regulation
Barry Fallon, who operates an iSold It store in Pennsylvania, says regulators in his state are forcing him to get an auctioneer's license to operate his eBay drop-off store. "To get a license in PA requires training and a one year apprenticeship before we can open a store," Fallon said. "So if they succeed, we will all have to close our doors for a year or pay someone with a license to oversee the operation." When asked about Pennylvania's apparent attempts to require eBay drop-off stores to have an auctioneer's license, eBay spokesperson Catherine England said in an email: eBay believes that Pennsylvania law is pretty clear and that trading assistants are generally not subject to the state's auctioneering regulations. We have been in contact with state regulators but they continue their enforcement actions against some sellers.
KKR confirms dropped out of Sainsbury bidding
London, April 09: Kohlberg Kravis Roberts has dropped out of the group bidding for J. Sainsbury, it confirmed on Thursday, as the British retailer declined to comment on reports it had received a buyout offer. The Times newspaper's Web site reported Sainsbury, Britain's third largest supermarket group, was reviewing a takeover bid by the remaining trio of private equity firms led by CVC Capital of around 9.5 billion pounds ($19 billion). Sainsbury had no plans to issue a statement on Thursday, a person familiar with the matter said. Sainsbury's spokeswoman and the private equity consortium declined to comment. KKR, which has launched a 10 billion pounds bid for Britain's largest pharmacy group Alliance Boots, said in an emailed statement it had quit the bidding group after "careful consideration".
The Importance Of Options
A recent survey by Manheim Auctions once more highlights the effect that factory-fitted options can have on a car's resale value. Manheim asked nearly 100 of its top used car buyers for their opinions on the effect of various optional extras on family cars, compact executives and full-sized executives. The results showed a similar trend in all three categories, with leather upholstery and satellite navigation having the most beneficial effects on residuals. The right paintwork was also considered important, with some respondents saying they wouldn't even bid on a car at auction if the colour was wrong, and especially if it was solid rather than metallic. In approximate order of importance, the other main influences on resale prices were climate control, a sunroof and a DVD/TV system.
Art auction house expects record sale
The Heffel Fine Art Auction House already lays claim to having held the four top auctions in Canadian history. But David Heffel feels the company's next auction on May 23 is really something special. "It will be the biggest sale in Canadian history, we think," says Heffel. "The previous record is $12.5 million, and we're going to beat that." His confidence comes from the high quality of the 219 lots in the auction, which will be held live at the Sheraton Wall Centre Hotel. Many are by the icons of Canadian art, and are coming on the market for the first time in decades. .
