Conservative vs Socialist in French Presidential Elections 2007

They have two rounds of elections for President. There are many advantages to this system, primarily that you get a shortlist to choose from. One of the two persons at left will be the next president of France and this could mean a lot more than a change of ambassador to Port of Spain. France is one of the few European countries that still maintains colonies in the Caribbean. Of course, they are no longer called colonies but "overseas territories." However, Trinidad and Tobago exporters will know very well that going to Martinique, Guadeloupe and Guyane (French Guiana) is stepping on French soil.

France has also passed ships carrying hazardous waste through the "international waters" of the Caribbean Sea. Let some of that spill and that's the end of any tourism hopes Trinidad and Tobago ever had.

Diggers to auction 'rat hole' for charity

The Victorian contingent of the famous Rats of Tobruk war veterans can no longer afford the upkeep on its inner-city bunker. The hall the veterans have called home for 50 years is expected to fetch up to $500,000 when it is sold at auction tomorrow and the proceeds will be donated to child cancer research. It is the end of an era but the diggers, now aged in their 80s and 90s, hope it is not the end of their story.

ABN to hear other bids but recommends Barclays deal

AMSTERDAM/LONDON (Reuters) - ABN AMRO (AAH.AS), which agreed on Monday to be acquired by British bank Barclays (BARC.L), said it would hear other bids for the bank, but said the Barclays deal was the best option for shareholders.

Barclays agreed to buy ABN in a deal worth just over 67 billion euros ($91.2 billion), the biggest-ever bank takeover.

Rijkman Groenink, ABN's top executive, said the board would hear other offers in line with its fiduciary duties, but said a merger with Barclays was the "best option" for shareholders.

The Royal Bank of Scotland Plc (RBS.L), Belgian-Dutch group Fortis (FOR.AS) and Spain's Santander (SAN.MC) have been preparing a counter takeover proposal for ABN and had been scheduled to meet with ABN's top management on Monday.
