Pope Car Auction Ends Without Sale

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- A 1999 metallic gray Volkswagen Golf believed to once belong to the pope went up for sale on eBay, but the auction ended Saturday without a winner.

For the second time in two years, eBay hosted an auction for a car said to be Pope Benedict XVI's old hatchback. Though bids surpassed $204,000, a reserve price wasn't met.

The car's owner, a Texas-based online casino, GoldenPalace.com, bought the car in 2005 on eBay from a German man. The casino had posted two German automobile registration documents that list "Josef Kardinal Ratzinger" as the vehicle's previous owner.

A spokeswoman for eBay, Catherine Fisher, said she did not know what the seller's minimum price was. A message left with GoldenPalace.com was not immediately returned Saturday evening.

Tenn. town echoes questions on bids; How could ambulance service ...

For the second straight day, Professional Medical Transport's bid to provide ambulance service in a suburb drew questions on how it could be done for such a low price.

The Knoxville-based company, as it had in Collierville on Monday, was the low bidder for the ambulance contract in Germantown, saying they could provide the service for a base price of $613,179 annually.

That was almost half the price of the lowest among the other three companies submitting bids for Tuesday's opening in Germantown. And the rest of the vendors and some city officials are interested in the details of ProMed's bid to make sure the company can meet the demands outlined by the suburbs.

"I'm surprised at some of the bids; some of them came in a lot lower than I ever thought I would see for a small operation like this," said Glenn Miller of Rural/Metro.

Prices jump at mammoth auction in Paris

PARIS: The skeleton of a 15,000-year-old Siberian mammoth was snapped up at auction in Paris on Monday for over one-and-a-half times the estimated price.

Dubbed "The President", the 3.8-metre-high tusked mammoth was sold for 260,000 euros ($NZ475,231) to an unknown bidder by Christie's in Paris, compared to a 150,000-180,000 euros guide price.

The skeleton of a woolly rhinoceros dating back some 10,000 years also beat its estimated price to sell for 100,000 euros, while rare bird and fish fossils went under the hammer along with a meteorite.

The widespread media coverage of the auction has caused mixed feelings among some scientists.

Pascal Picq, a palaeontologist at the College of France, told France Info radio the risk of a commercialization of fossils could cause their decline.
