Schools will seek more bids
The Arkansas City Board of Education on Monday rejected a lone bid for a half million dollars to build a school access road and authorized the project engineer to go back and get more bids. The access road project would accommodate a planned railroad overpass at Kansas Avenue at the railroad crossing just east of Arkansas City Middle School. The lone bidder, LaFarge Construction, of Wichita, indicated today that it would rebid the project, said Al Oakes, a senior partner of Smith & Oakes Engineering, the project engineers. "That's good news," Oakes said. He added, however, that there is a chance that a second round of bids -- to be solicited during the next 30 days -- might result in higher bids. One factor that could raise costs would be a higher cost of fuel.

SHEPHERD’S CENTER Auction ahead
Twelve months of flowers, six months of wine and one hour of professional organizing await the right bid Saturday night. These items and more than 150 others will be auctioned at a benefit for the Shepherd's Center of the Northland. The event includes a dinner, a dance, and live and silent auctions. Proceeds from ticket and auction sales will be used to keep the nonprofit's doors open for Northland seniors who use its services and programs to make their lives easier and more fulfilling. Fundraising is necessary, said executive director Rebecca Gordon, because "none of our programs make money." Last year, more than 2,200 individuals used services or participated in programs. Almost all of these were free. Not quite half of the operating budget of $229,600 comes from grants given to support specific programs.
Up to seven bids expected for city hall
POULSBO — The hazy picture surrounding Little Norway's city hall project should get clearer once the April 30 deadline for proposals arrives. “We're going to have four for sure, but it could be five or six or possibly seven," Planning Director Barry Berezowsky told the city council's public works committee Wednesday. Earlier in the week, Berezowsky said he received a call from an interested party asking for information about the city hall project, which came as pleasant surprise. Ahead of the April 30 deadline, Berezowsky said the city's long range planning committee will discuss the criteria that will be used to evaluate the potential submittals. “We're not going to be comparing apples to apples or apples to oranges," he said. “We might get brownies." The long range planning committee, which consists of Mayor Kathryn Quade, Councilman Ed Stern, Councilman Dale Rudolph and Councilwoman Connie Lord, will need at least two weeks to review all of the proposals, Berezowsky said.
